Joycean Transfigurations: Ulysses and Ireland in the Works of Ferenc Martyn and Imre Szemethy

One of the greatest literary works in history, Ulysses by James Joyce was published in its entirety in 1922. This exhibition, celebrating the centenary, presents a selection of the Joyce-illustrations and Irish themed graphics and paintings by excellent representatives of modern Hungarian art, FERENC MARTYN and IMRE SZEMETHY, in organised by the Hungarian James Joyce Society with the support of the Embassy of Ireland, Hungary; in cooperation with Janus Pannonius Museum (Pécs) and Museum of Kuny Domokos (Tata). The exhibition, hosted at the FUGA Budapest Centre of Architecture, will be open for two weeks until June 30.
Ulysses Journey 2022: Film Screening
So many works by composers from Ireland are inspired by Ireland’s world-famous writers like James Joyce, Contemporary Music Centre, Ireland (CMC) wanted to mark this major milestone in a way that celebrates, at home and abroad, our dynamic composers alongside Ireland’s prowess in filmmaking. To celebrate this event, CMC and Centre Culturel Irlandais agreed to co-commission six new works by composers from Ireland that are inspired by, reflect on and/or respond to Ulysses.
Following an open call, composers Ed Bennett, Darragh Kelly, Garth Knox, Anselm McDonnell, Ailís Ní Ríain and Ultan O’Brien were selected to compose new works inspired by Ulysses for accordion, spoken word and/or electronics. These composers collaborated with filmmakers Jonathan C. Creasy, Rioghnach Ni Ghrioghair, Laura Sheeran and Ross Wilson BEM & Art Ward to create visual landscapes for their new music, and Ailís Ní Ríain and Ultan O’Brien created films for their own works.
Ulysses Journey 2022 commenced in February with simultaneous screenings of the world premieres of these six newly-commissioned music and film works by composers and filmmakers from Ireland. These short films are varied both in their artistic approach and their presentation. They include music that spans a range of instruments from accordion and electronics to clarinet and concertina; spoken word in English and Irish; black and white and colour films alongside archival footage; and musicians, actors, visual artists, graphic designers, poets, dancers, water sounds creators and spoken words artists ranging from a composer’s father to internationally acclaimed actors.
The screening of these films will be preceded by a discussion on Joyce and Music by composer Benjamin Dwyer with Linda O’Shea Farren, CMC’s Projects, Programmes & Events Manager. The screenings will also run for two weeks until June 30.
